AMU’s Intellectual Capital is heading towards Bankruptcy; Or is it already there?

They reject a proposal to upgrade their women’s college to a women’s university.

Sir Syed means a lot more to them than their prophet, at least in public fora. While any talk of Islam, Allah, or what the messenger of Allah wanted from us, is a complete no-no to them, the Aligs never tire discussing what Sir Syed wanted. Most of this is empty talk, though! If it was not empty, we would have seen one or two Sir Syeds emerging from among them, every year, and Muslims would not slide to the pathetic place below the dalits of India. For the Aligs, dining in the name of Sir Syed, once a year seems to be enough of a tribute to the great man that they think he was. The hands of Aligs seem more proficient on the bellows of the harmonium they play every Sir Syed Day than on making any efforts to transform the great man’s dream into reality! They talk, they sing, they act, they debate, they praise, they curse, all that they do, is more for the sake of tafreeh than to reflect any commitment to the cause of their great man. They seem to be still in the university campus. Campus, huh!! The only campuses they have are the ones they opposed establishing free by the government. The community awaits their maturing into intellectual beings. Even at sixty, most of them behave like fresh graduates, forever young (and immature). Why do I have to write all of this, today?                     top
The AMU academic council which is expected to form the core of intellect, setting the vision, mission, and goals for the academic upgradation of their university, “unanimously” rejected a proposal to upgrade the status of its women’s college to that of a university. To a commoner like me, it means that there is serious lack of intellect in the academic council. Or, there was something seriously wrong with the proposal. The former opinion gets stronger with the possibility of the latter, as the proposal was formulated by members of academic council themselves. If the proposal had inappropriate clauses that could undermine the existence of status quo at AMU, those could have been modified by using some wisdom from the treasure of intellect that the academic council claims to possess. Rejecting the proposal outrightly does leave severe doubts about the claim. Each one of those who are involved in this rejection should be asked if they would also reject a free-of-cost upgradation of his/ her home into a palace.

Some argue there is no need for a women-only university in the modern age? But, we are talking of a women-only college’s progression into a university, not of a new one. They love Shaikh Abdullah, the founder of the women’s college, and reverently call him Papa Mian. Like Sir Syed, they never tire praising him for his vision. Like drowning Sir Syed’s vision of producing Aligs in whose intellect-driven acts must be embedded standards and values of Islam (La Ilaha Illallah on the forehead) in the cacophony of harmonium, deeper and deeper every Sir Syed Day, what they remember of the great Shaikh Abdullah is that he was Papa Mian! Just that! Even when someone pointed out that Papa Mian’s vision was to ultimately make a university out of the women’s college, our big brothers had excuses aplenty against the idea!

Some argue minority character would be at stake. As if they had one! These are the same people who boast of the secular values of AMU. And, still are so much concerned for the minority character! Well, they mostly remember of secularism whenever they are reminded of being muslims. They don’t mind wiping off the Kalama Tayyaba from their foreheads, as if it was just to be displayed on the outer skin of their foreheads; its essence and its values not to penetrate any deeper, into their heads! I wonder why these secular products of AMU never demand a Hindu temple, a Sikh’s gurudwara, and a Christian’s church to be built in their campus alongside the jaáma masjid! Or, to depict the true secular character, demand the demolition of this masjid and all other masajid within the campus, banning muslim prayer in the residential halls and public recital of Quran! Fortunately, this talk of secularism is also just a tafreeh for them!

Women’s empowerment is society’s empowerment, they shout at the top of their voice, for the world to believe they want muslim women to reach the top and rub shoulders with men – all men. Does this upgradation of the women’s college into a university not align with this call of theirs! Even the biggest proponents of allowing the undergraduate students of the women’s college to use the crowded main university library hate the proposal for a separate larger library for these women. They say, separating women from them is subjugating the women. I think it’s not the women they are worried about, but themselves. They can’t wait a few years until marriage to harvest women’s company for carnal pleasure. They want us to believe that their intellectual growth would not be normal without rubbing shoulders with members of the opposite sex. They make us believe that women are equal to men; why they call women the opposite then, I wonder! They must demand eradication of Gynecology as a department from all medical colleges and hospitals.

A benevolent AMU professor (rare stuff, there) commented that these council members were fortunately not born when the upgradation of MAO College into AMU was proposed; well, some parents pray it was better not to have than have such children born to them. This professor argued “HRD ministry has taken a decision to upgrade/establish 20 women's universities under 12th five year plan with the expenditure of one lakh and ninety thousand crore rupees”. Our intellectual colleagues did not fight against this pronouncement of the HRD ministry; alas, they can only fight inside their own homes! Non even inside, someone exclaimed; only outside of the gates! One intellectual colleague argued that this upgradation would “dilute” the women’s college. Voila! He also argued that “universities are not like residential colonies which could be built so close”. He forgot we are talking of residential universities! Some other intellectual colleagues argued that AMU is an ailing elephant at present, and cannot bear the burden of expansion or upgradation; it must remain where it is! It seems these guys wiped away their intellect in an attempt to scratch the kalama tayyaba off their heads!
 
AMU represents the muslims of India, so whatever is true of Aligs may also unfortunately be true of us, non-Aligs. They are not the only muslims making excuses against any positive steps that are proposed for the community. Excuses seem to be the only produce of our intellect these days; we never shy away from inventing new ones when an existing one fails the test of logic. Assumptions abound and conspiracy theories flood the gates of muslim intellect anytime a positive proposal to upgrade the facilities for muslims is put forward by anyone, particularly if it comes from the government. Unfortunately, all such attempts are resisted by elements from within the muslim community - be it expansion of the university to serve more muslim dominant areas (AMU’s new centres), or the minority status (challenge against JMI). We possibly feel gratified talking of the pathetic condition of the muslim community, race with each other in showing off that each of us knows about the deteriorating condition better than others, to the extent that we start enjoying the pathetic condition, and hate any elevation from the dark pits of misery into the sunshine of glory! Are we our own enemies who love to remain where we are, worse than dalits, blame "others" for all of our miseries, and remain in an agitative state forever, acting as sadists? God save us!

Any private owner of a college would crave for upgrading his/ her college to a university, every moment; why are we against the upgradation of this AMU women’s college which was established with the vision to become a university?

Lakum deenukum Wa liya deeni [To you is your way of life, and to me is my way]

Prologue: French law bans people from covering their face in public; a violation can result in a €150 fine; authorities say full veils are a symbol of repression and stand against France's secular values. On 22 Sep 2011, Miss Ahmas, 32, was ordered to pay a 120-euro (£104) fine, while Miss Nait Ali, 36, was fined 80 euros (£70) for violating the ban. The women were arrested when they brought a birthday cake for mayor and MP Jean-Francois Copé, who pushed Europe's first anti-burqa law through parliament. To the French authorities, these women perhaps wanted to say “Lakum deenukum waliya deeni. Fines cannot deter us from following our deen (way of life)”.    
An emphatic message from the fined French women perhaps was, “Harder you try to force us away from our way of life, closer we would get to it, because your chastisement acts as a reminder to us of what the deen of our role-models was.”

Main story: The convocation program of BITS Pilani’s Dubai campus was in progress, in the presence of dignitaries of UAE as well as those from India. Parents enjoyed their wards receiving the hard-earned degrees more than the candidates, I thought. However, the students did express their delight at the fruit of labour being handed over to them by Birla himself. Claps and screaming sounds of joy filled the large hall, every time a student gracefully walked the podium to receive his or her treasure. The scene was much different from our own convocation both at IIT-BHU and at XLRI where girls were hard to be seen; here, girls were almost in matching numbers as boys, reflecting a cultural transformation in India as well as in UAE; perhaps, more so in UAE, wherein girls are known to outnumber boys by huge margins in all higher educational institutions. Boys and girls walked elegantly towards the chairman (Kumar Mangalam Birla), shook hands, received the coveted degree along with words of congratulations from the chairman, posed for a photograph to capture this momentous occasion forever, and walked away all smiles, showing off their precious possession, some of them literally leaping with joy right on the podium. Subhanallah!

When my son walked the blessed podium, I clapped more profusely, screamed more loudly. However, the intensity of my clapping and the decibels of my scream for my son was not the highest. It went to a girl; a muslim girl. She did all that other girls did, walked elegantly towards the chairman, received the coveted degree along with words of congratulations from the chairman, posed for a photograph to capture this momentous occasion forever, and walked away all smiles. So, what was special about this girl that made me clap more profusely and scream with greater joy than for my own son? When the gracious man-of-the-moment, Kumar Mangalam Birla, extended his hands to shake with this girl, she did not extend hers. The wise man pulled his hand back swiftly, and handed over her degree as gracefully as he did for all others; the embarrassment reflecting through his facial expression was only momentary. She was dressed as all other girls, in the convocation dress; however, the hijab on her head was quite conspicuous, even under the convocation headgear. She not only carried her muslim name along, to the podium, but a culture she had close to her heart, perhaps entrenched deep into her heart, mind, and soul; or, maybe she wanted to let the world know she was proud to be a muslim. I thought otherwise. I felt as if without uttering a word she had conveyed loud and clear to the highly respected person she faced, “Lakum deenakum Wa leya deen” [To you is your way of life, and to me is mine].

This young muslim girl refused to follow the footsteps of many other muslim and non-muslim girls who did not hesitate shaking their hands with the great man in front of them; I thought she declared unequivocally, “I refuse to adopt you culture, your way of life, despite my genuine respect for you, sir. For me, the culture given by my Lord means far more than what the world covets. I am not like the ordinary women of my society; I am like the women of my prophet’s household whom Allah advised to guard their modesty and honour. How I wish I could be like my role models, the ummahat-ul-mumineen, the mothers of the believers!” I felt she was sad she had to study in a co-educational institution, where she had to be taught by men most of whom did not know the value of her hijab. I thought she was not happy walking the podium in front of gazing eyes of men; but that was all the compromise she was ready to make. She was definitely not ready to let the hands of a ghair-mahram touch hers; she could at least follow her role models to this extent. Subhanallah!

I continue to recall the action of this young ambassador of Islamic values, as it reminds me of the ayah “Lakum deenukum waliya deeni” and the context in which the ayah (and Surah Al-Kafiroon) was revealed. When the Quraish got frustrated in their attempt to stop prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam from calling the Makkans to worshipping of One God leaving the man-made gods to themselves, when their insults failed, their plans to kill him failed because of his uncle, Abu Talib, who enjoyed powerful social standing and extended full protection and support to his nephew, the idolaters offered that Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam) worship their gods for a year, and they worship his Lord for a year. A constellation of influential polytheists intercepted the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam) while he was circumambulating the Holy Ka’abah, and made this offer. Arguing, "Should the Lord you worship prove to be better than ours, then it will be so much better for us, but if our gods proved to be better than yours, then you would have benefit from it." Allâh, the Exalted, was decisive on the spot and revealed this Surah (Chapter) Al-Kafiroon whose last ayah is Lakum deenukum waliya deeni.

In a desperate attempt, later, to stop the prophet, some twenty-five most respectable people of the pagans approached Abu Talib, urging him to stop his nephew’s activities, which if allowed unchecked, they said, would involve him into severe hostility. Abu Talib was deeply distressed at this open threat and the breach with his people and their enmity, but he could not afford to desert the Messenger too. He sent for his nephew and told him what the people had said, then thereafter adding, "Spare me and yourself and put not burden on me that I can’t bear." Upon this the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam) thought that his uncle would let him down and would no longer support him, so he replied: "O my uncle! By Allâh, if they put the sun in my right hand and the moon in my left on condition that I abandon this course, until Allâh has made me victorious, or I perish therein, I would not abandon it."

The above saying of our Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihe Wasallam) explains the ayah Lakum deenukum waliya deeni so very well. Subhanallah! Our weak faith leaves us so frail and fragile to the attractive enticements of the seemingly developed world and their social, cultural and religious values that we keep on abandoning the course of our deen many times over, every day. That is why the young girl’s public proclamation through a silent gesture is so much valuable. Subhanallah!

Epilogue: Qul ya ayyuha alkafiroon. La aAAbudu ma taAAbudoon. Say to the unbelievers (kafiroon) that we would never bow to the (prohibited) desires and temptations that you make yourselves subservient of. You keep doing whatever you do. We don’t care! However interesting, attractive, or exciting you make those look like, we would never ever accept those as our deen, because we know for sure that they are not the ways of ultimate success. The repetition of the declaration in remaining ayahs adds to the emphasis and importance of the indomitable rejection of the ways of the disbelievers, the ways that iblees calls upon to.
(Iblis) said: "O my Lord! because Thou hast put me in the wrong, I will make (wrong) fair-seeming to them on the earth, and I will put them all in the wrong,-
(  سورة الحجر  , Al-Hijr, Chapter #15, Verse #39)
