Good Deeds and the Five Pillars of Islam [Fundamental Misconceptions Weakening the Foundation of Muslim Faith - Part2] - a Simplistic Critique of the Prevalent Misunderstanding

.... by Shakeel Ahmad (shakeeluae@gmail.com)

What are Good Deeds? Iman (Faith). Salah (Praying - Namaz). Saum (Fasting - Roza). Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah) for those who have the means to do so. Zakah (Obligatory Charity - zakaat), for those who have wealth beyond a prescribed limit. That's it? But, aren't these known as the 5 pillars of Islam? And, rightly so! Do we stop thinking about good deeds beyond just these "Five Pillars of Islam"? Try to recall the khutbas that you have been hearing over the years in every juma'a and other Islamic gatherings. The image above attempts to summarise just a few of the action items commanded by Allah that we may consider as good deeds - the idea is to ponder upon the fact that we have squeezed our understanding of good deeds into a small box, and we cannot come out of it because this narrow understanding has got internalised completely so much so that anything else beyond the 5 pillars might be considered as bidah (innovation).

Well, most of us have definitely pondered upon the logic behind the 5 action-items being considered as "5 pillars of Islam" despite the fact that this term cannot be derived directly from the Quran. Great scholars of the past have definitely done a great favour to Islam by doing so. The present scholars can never reject it, nor can any right-thinking scholar reject this in the future. However, we must understand that if these five action-items are obligatory for every momin, then what about the great many other commandments by Allah in the Quran? Pillars alone don't make a house! Or, do they? We need foundations, walls, roofs, doors and windows, interiors, furniture, kitchen equipment, kitchen garden, and so on, to make a house! A pillar is definitely an extremely valuable part of the structure that could make a house strong and durable, but what about the foundation from which the pillar must seek support and transfer the entire load of the other components of the house as well as of the people using it? What about the walls that not only help maintain our privacy but protect the house from unwanted infringements by hostile creatures and external attacks by cold or heat, wind, dust or rain, etc.? What about the roof which is such a vital element for a house that it cannot even be called a house without it!

Will Allah Accept Us as Pious if We limit our Actions to Just the 5 Pillars?

If following the 5 pillars with sincerity could secure a place for us in Jannah (paradise), then why does Allah command us to do so many other things throughout the quran? Well, many of us limit ourselves further by claiming that just the first pillar will be enough, that is, the lip-service (proclaiming shahadah by our tongue) without any confirming action can reserve our place in jannah. Even if the claim alone to be a follower of Allah's prophet (peace be upon him) hardly translates into action to justify being a follower of the person who spent 23 years acting on what he taught! Is this a fallacy, or a self-delusion?

Good Deeds and the Five Pillars of Islam [Fundamental Misconceptions Weakening the Foundation of Muslim Faith - Part2]

We love to claim that Islam is the only "divine" book ensuring the rights of women to the extent that they could even be treated as equal to men in every matter of worship and most other matters. However, when it comes to giving away the property rights to our sisters and mothers and other women of our families, treating them with dignity as commanded by Allah, how would you rate the Ummah? How many of our men even think of paying the obligatory dowry (mehar), before touching their newly-wed brides? Is affordability even thought of while deciding the amount of mehar? Or, has it become just a tool to compensate for the traditional dowry being given to the bride by her parents? Given? Or, extracted from them? Or, has it become a tool to keep poor men forecfully bound to the spouse (cannot divorce because he cannot pay the mehar)? Is this the purpose of mehar? How easily has this great aspect of Islam been dumped into the pits of fallacy! Fallacy? Or, deliberate disobedinece of Allah Who we claim to be following as our Master?

In the holy Quran, the text-book that Allah wants us to recite, understand, practice and internalise, is full of commandments about good deeds (and good behaviour). The above image is over-crowded with a sample of good deeds mentioned in the quran, so is the quran - far more than we can list out on just a page like this. The areas I have been able to list our cover Economics & Accounting, Contracts & Agreements, Business Relations/ Deals, Family & Material Relations, Environment Protection, Human Rights, Animal Rights, Women’s Rights, Property Rights, Politics & Governance, Moral Values, Justice ... exploration of how God has created the universe and scientific explorations that could benefit the humanity and the environment forms an integral part of instructions in the Quran. Ahadith are full of prophetic actions and instructions concernig numerous good deeds that the believers must be engaged in throughout the limited time of adulthood at their disposal so that the infinite time of the hereafter could bring permanent success for them. A sample of the good deeds mentioned in the holy Quran, relating to all spheres of life, has been listed below with their references, to help us understand that there is so much to do rather than limting ourselves to just the 5 pillars! This is particularly important for those of us who consider themselves as righteous.

Acting upon the various good deeds may even bring challenges for the believers, not only from the ibless but also from a variety of agents of iblees striving to turn us away from our Creator and follow in the footsteps of devil. In this respect, please read another article to understand why facing those challenges is of great importnance for the righteous believers. Can we call ourselves as righteous if we run away from the challenges?
